OK, lets get these end of week posts back on track. Here’s the weekend recap from Christmas through today, the 27th.

Friday Dec 25th – Christmas day cycling – 18.3 miles, 1hr 10minutes. [Ride info]. Had dinner with the parents in PDX. Secured some black tea :)

Saturday Dec 26th – Went snowboarding at MHM after dark with Javier, Chad and Jim. The runs were well groomed. Photos have been posted on Facebook.

Later that night, I started to plan out the major cycling rides for 2010. Some invites have already been sent out on Facebook (sorry for all of the spam). The ride events that I plan on doing this year are listed below. Note that most of these rides are for a good cause, I encourage you to participate!

  • Reach the Beach 2010 (American Lung Association)- May 15, 2010
  • LiveSTRONG 2010 (Lance Armstrong Foundation) – Seattle – June 20, 2010 (Tentative, falls on Father’s day)

Of course, there will also be a bunch of random rides after work and on the weekends. :)

Sunday Dec 27th – Went cycling with Erik around HB. 22.11 miles. [Ride info]. I DID IT!!! Cycled 2509 miles for the year! :) I’ll put in more if the weather holds for the next few days. If not, we’ll start counting the new miles early January 2010! :D

Alright people, until next time! Ride on and stay safe!

WE COMPLETED THE 2007 SEATTLE TO PORTLAND RIDE!!

WE COMPLETED THE 2007 SEATTLE TO PORTLAND RIDE!!

I rode with 9 other crazy bicycling friends (and 8990 strangers) for the 28th annual Seattle to Portland Bicycle Classic.

We camped out at the halfway mark in Centralia, WA. We had 3 great support team members who helped us out at the half way mark. Thank you for setting up our camp site! I am definitely doing this again in 2008! I’m sure that everyone will do this again as well (or I’ll keep asking them until they cave in hehehe). Next time, we may want to register a little earlier and confirm registrations, and possibly take the train up.

I’ll post photos when they are all available. Until then, these are the ride details that I was able to record:

Day 1: 102 miles; 6hrs 29minutes; avg speed 16.3mph
Day 2: my computer got reset at mile 140. So, these are the mile 140+ stats:
3hrs 57minutes, 15.24mph; avg cad: 67; max: 31.5; 60.29mi

The annual event did not go with out incident, however. Some guy fell on to my bike and cracked the left carbon fiber crank. The replacement is $170.00 + labor, and will be here in about 2 weeks. The guy stopped between me and Simon and fell onto my bike. This was at mile 25. I didn’t notice the crack until mile 75. I’m thankful that the crank stayed in one piece through the 204 mile ride. There were other crashes involving bicyclists only leaving them with scrapes, bruises and broken bones. On top of that, I am saddened to hear that a drunk driver did a hit-and-run with a bicyclist Sunday morning. The following is an excerpt from the Seattle PI article:

“Gerald Marvin, 24, of Seattle suffered serious injuries when the driver of a sport utility vehicle swerved out of his lane on U.S. 30 northwest of Portland. Struck from behind, Marvin slammed into two other cyclists, who suffered minor injuries.

Police pulled over a 40-year-old driver, an ex-convict with a 1989 conviction for an Oregon murder, eight miles from the accident scene.

Daniel B. Whittlinger was arrested on suspicion of felony hit-and-run, driving under the influence and violating his parole, according to the Oregon State Police.

Witnesses said the driver initially stopped his Jeep Grand Cherokee after the 9:20 a.m. crash, but then sped away, said Lt. Gregg Hastings, a state police spokesman.

Whittlinger is scheduled to be arraigned Monday.”

This is one large win for cyclists. We do fight back.

I plan to do the following bike rides this year. If you’re interested, let me know and we’ll start up a biking routine! :)

Reach the Beach

  • Date: Sat May 19
  • Distance: 100 miles
  • Cause: This is a benefit ride for the American Lung Association of Oregon and is a great training ride for the Seattle to Portland. Proceeds will help prevent and cure lung disease and promote lung health through education, advocacy and research.
  • Notes: This event requires all riders to pay the registration fee as well as raising at least $50 for donating to the American Lung Association of Oregon. If you’re not riding, and would like you to help out, please donate money to the cause ($10, $5, even $1, every dollar helps!). My goal is to raise at least $50 for my ride - I’ll post the donation link after I register. Help out the research and donate online! (or via check!) :)
  • Registration fee: $25 + at least $50 in fund raising donations
  • Website: http://www.reachthebeach.org/

Providence Bridge Pedal

Since 1990, the BTA has been promoting and protecting the rights of bicyclists in order to create safe, sane and sustainable communities in Oregon and Southwest Washington. The Providence Women and Heart Disease Program is also a beneficiary. One in every three American women develops heart disease, the leading cause of death among women in the United States. Women often experience very different symptoms than men do, and they tend to ignore unfamiliar symptoms. Providence is teaching women about the symptoms they should watch for and helping them receive needed care in a timely fashion from doctors who are experts in women’s heart health.
